Traditional Portuguese Food
For starters try caldo verde a soup made from shredded cabbage and potatoes or melao com presunto (the Portuguese equivalent of melon and Palma ham).
Grilled Sardines (sardinha essada)- the simplest of foods but delicious - usually served with little potatoes in their skins and a salad.
Arroz de Marisco - similar to paella but more liquid with clams, prawns and fish cooked with peppers, tomato, onions and rice.

Caldeirada - This is a fish stew made with all kinds of different fish
Cataplana - This is a stew, and can be meat or fish, cooked and served in the tightly clamped copper dish which seals in the flavours. Fun to try and share.
Cabrito - This is kid, either served as a Caldeirada (stew) or assado no forno (oven roasted).
Cozido - This is the traditional "Sunday" dish of boiled pork, beef, vegetables and various sausages. Again a good dish to try and to share.
Feijoada - This is a traditional bean stew, usually made with pork, or seafood. |
